About Us

brochure_2008.jpgFrom the scepter’d isles of Britain to the shores of the New World, The Wayfarers continue to blaze new trails. The unique Walks that began in 1984 in England now span Europe, the United States and New Zealand with fresh itineraries, new destinations and innovative ways of experiencing the special culture of country life.

Founders Michael West and Christopher Hague took their passion for the English countryside – its history, environment and people – and turned a simple walk in the country into an experience, education and adventure.

Our Vision

In their vision, a Wayfarers’ Walk would offer an insider’s view of rural Britain with exceptional food and wine, luxurious inns, knowledgeable leaders and a chance to meet the people who embody country life. Farmers, landed gentry, artisans, historians and naturalists all bring their wit and wisdom to a Wayfarers’ Walk.

The Wayfarers set new standards for walking tours that soon expanded to France, Spain, Switzerland, Eastern Europe, New Zealand and to Maine, New Mexico, Alaska, Oregon, Washington and Utah. Walks take us down paths trod by Roman legions, along stunning coastlines and alpine trails, over the Lavender Roads of Provence, through a Tuscan olive grove, the Grand Canyon and the spectacular glaciers, mountains and lakes of New Zealand’s South Island.

New for 2010

This year we have designed new Walks in three destinations, in Jane Austen Country and Suffolk Coast & Cambridge in England, and the Gardens and Gourmet Cuisine of Tuscany. With 35 destinations and over 85 individual walks on offer there is sure to be something for everyone.
