Classic Tuscany - September 26-October 2, 2010
Introduction
The Italian Renaissance sprang from the rich landscape of Tuscany â its green and golden hills, groves of cypress and olive trees, brilliant light and exquisite cities. From this rich earth comes the acclaimed cuisine of Tuscany, one of the worldâs healthiest. Feast on olive oil, Tuscan beans, vegetables, fish, pasta, crostini, risotto, handmade cheeses, succulent beef and wild boar. Hearty, honest and subtle, the food, like the country, is a revelation.
We explore the medieval treasures of Montalcino in the heart of the Brunello wine country, enjoy a wine tasting at an organic farm and delight in a lesson about Tuscan cooking.

Walk Itinerary
Sunday
Before our rendezvous in Siena, undoubtedly one of Italy's most enchanting cities, allow time to visit the wonderful cathedral and its stunning piazza. We take a scenic drive to Montalcino, in the heart of the Brunello wine country, for our Introductory Talk and Welcome Dinner.
Monday
In the morning we explore the medieval treasures of Montalcino, one the most historic and vibrant Tuscan hilltop towns. After a short transfer we walk through olive groves and vineyards to the romantic abbey of Sant’Antimo to attend to a gregorian chant. After lunch in a local trattoria, we continue walking until we reach a family run Brunello organic wine farm where we will be shown the wine production in the canteens and enjoy a wonderful wine tasting.
Tuesday
We walk directly from the hotel over rolling hillsides, through vineyards and wheat fields, to the medieval village of San Quirico d’Orcia, where we have lunch in a local restaurant. After lunch we walk through the countryside along dirt roads to the hot water Spa resort of Bagno Vignoni, with a Renaissance pool in the main square where hot water bubbles up from underground springs. Here Santa Caterina of Siena and Lorenzo the Magnificent, of the Medici family, came to enjoy the benefits of these waters. We can spend the afternoon in the hot water pool or wander around and relax in a café.
Wednesday
On Monte Cetona, we walk through oak and maple woods to see the caves where Saint Francis dwelt and continue to lunch in Castigliocello del Trinoro. Trails through beech woods lead us to the spectacular stately gardens of La Foce, originally designed by the English architect Cecil Pinsent, and once the home of Iris Origo. The harmony between buildings, garden and nature makes this an ideal example of Tuscany's architectural and cultural evolution in the 20th century.
Thursday
We walk from our hotel to Agriturismo Il Rigo, a Tuscan farmhouse specializing in cookery courses, where we will have the chance to join in preparing typical Tuscan specialities followed by lunch in this glorious setting. In the afternoon we either walk or have a transfer to visitthe Romitorio of Pienza, an Etruscan tomb excavated in the rocks and which was used as a hermitage in the Middle Ages. We continue to our hotel in the lovely town of Pienza, a delightful hilltop town built by Pope Pius II in his own honor.
Friday
This morning, we visit Montepulciano, a stunning little renaissance town perched on its hill of tufa and famous for its "vino nobile" red wine. We walk from the magnificent church of San Biagio to the hillside village of Montichiello, with superb views of the Orcia valley. We lunch at an organic farm before returning to Pienza for an aperitif and Farewell Dinner.
Saturday
This morning The Wayfarers arrange your transfer to Chiusi station.
This itinerary represents a typical Walk. We prepare itineraries well in advance of the trip and therefore we reserve the right to make changes due to weather, local events or other circumstances - but always to improve the experience of our guests.

The Hotel Dei Capitani is in a unique position between two valleys Orcia and Arbia on one side and the historic Montalcino with its winding streets and its small houses on the other. The building originates from the 1700's although it is thought to date back even earlier than this when it was supposed to have been used as a refuge for the inhabitants of Siena escaping from the Florentine army; hence the name of 'Hotel of the Captains'.
Rooms are all styled with 'Poor Art' furnishings, telephone, satellite TV, safe, mini-bar, air-conditioning and private bathroom equipped with hair-dryer. Free internet access is available. The swimming pool's shape is inspired by the old 'Fontone medioevale' (medieval fountain) is located within the large garden. The building dates back to 1400 and is one of the oldest in the historic centre of San Quirico D'Orcia, built by the noble family Biringucci. There is a large garden shaded by vines and ancient olive trees and seasonally fragranced with the scent of lavender and aromatic herbs. The highly recommended restaurant, where guests can enjoy typical dishes based on traditional recipes, features the original vaulted ceiling and the dining area extends into the garden under the shade of olive trees.
All bedrooms, decorated in the warm soft colours of traditional Tuscan style, have a private bathroom with bathtub/shower, minibar, safe, hairdryer, Satellite TV, airconditioning and direct dial telephone. The Hotel Relais "Cloister of Pienza" is situated in the heart of Pienza, a Renaissance city planned by Rossellino - following the will of Pope Pio II. The entrance to this former monastery is located at the back of the austere white cloister that gives the hotel its name. This stylishly converted 15th century monastery has retained many of the original features of the monks’ cells including frescoed, vaulted ceilings and tiled floors. In contrast, the furniture breaks with monkish antiquity and concentrates on modern comfort without spoiling the character of the building. Rooms include ensuite bathroom with shower or bath, hair-dryer, direct telephone, satellite TV, minibar and safe.
The lounges, with their old beamed, decorative ceilings, and restaurant lead on to a delightful terrace garden where a swimming pool has recently been built.
