England - A land of language and culture, piece and tranquillity

The British Isles

From historic homes like ‘Downton Abbey’ to mystic stone circles, cute cottages built of honey-colored stone, wild moorlands, smugglers’ coves, historic fishing villages, Roman remains, ancient woodlands and rich pastures, the British Isles are a land of myth and tradition, long celebrated in literature and art.

Our Walks deliver an enticingly full spread of British culture, history and landscape. You can live like an English Lord for the week at Pentillie Castle on the Cornish border, stride out from coast-to-coast across the northern moors where William Wordsworth once dwelled, explore the Emperor Hadrian’s Roman Wall on the Scottish borders, see Megalithic sites on the picturesque Pembrokeshire coastline, spend an evening with the National Poet of Wales and discover the life of novelist Jane Austen as her family knew her at their homes in the civilized Hampshire downlands.

We gain an insight into other dynastic dramas when we visit Highclere Castle in Berkshire, known as Downton Abbey, and walk by Menabilly in Cornwall, the setting for Manderley in Daphne Du Maurier’s novel ‘Rebecca’. On Exmoor we pass the remote farmstead where Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote ‘Kubla Khan’, until he was interrupted by the infamous ‘person from Porlock’.

In Scotland we trek the majestic mountains of the Cairngorm National Park, tally a wee while by the lochs of Glenmore and walk Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. Rest assured we enjoy an authentic whisky tasting!

Like Scotland, Northern Ireland also offers rugged natural beauty and warm hospitality. We take a poignant tour of Belfast and hear from some of those who lived through The Troubles, as well as visiting Londonderry. Outside the cities we visit the Giant’s Causeway, take a ferry to Rathlin Island and explore the Glens of Antrim.

As well as our scheduled brochure Walks in the UK, we also offer Private Walks with itineraries tailored to your personal preferences. Ask us for details.

Whatever your choice, our Walk Managers and renowned Walk Leaders will be at your side, helping you to enjoy an amazing walking vacation.
