Why hike in Iberia?

The Iberian peninsula – Spain and Portugal – is a hiker’s dream destination. Charming and intriguing, with its Moorish and Basque influences, this southwestern region of Europe has great weather, wonderful food and wine and sea and landscapes that are full of drama.

Portugal's Algarve

portugal algarve

Our new Walk on Portugal’s stunning Algarve coast takes us to the very edge of the continent. Atlantic breezes brush coastal trails and mile upon mile of glorious beach. Fig and almond groves surround whitewashed villages, and on the coast fishing nets hang to dry outside cute cottages. Cape St Vincent and its lighthouse is a reminder of Portugal’s history as a great trading nation of conquest, exploration and seamanship. The regional capital of Faro harks back to the days of a thriving port in the alleys of its old town. A day’s expedition takes us to the summit of Foia, the highest point in the mountain range of the Algave and where we enjoy a well-earned lunch, with stunning views.

Hike the Camino

camino de santiago

Our Walk highlighting that great pilgrims’ route the Camino de Santiago takes us to inland Spain. Away from hectic cities and tourist beaches, this is a chance to wander through old Spain. Following the sign of the scallop shell, we discover medieval villages and experience rural Spanish culture as we head towards our goal, shared by pilgrims for more than 1,000 years: a first glimpse of the towers of Santiago de Compostela.

Discover Basque Country

pays basque

Where Spain nudges against France, the unique culture of the Basque people is evident. Our Walk in Basque Country – the Pays Basque – transcends modern borders as we find out more about this most ancient of people. The peppery Basque language, Euskara, is alive and well and is still spoken, proudly, by Basques whether they live in France or Spain. The long range of the Pyrenees provide an ever-present backdrop to our days on the trail, combining sand beaches, the charm and illustrious history of harbor town St Jean de Luz and the glamor of Biarritz.
