Ljubljana, European Green Capital 2016, is the start point for The Wayfarers Walking Vacations’ fall Walk in Slovenia.

As countries go, Slovenia is a mere youngster. Just 25-years-old this year, this tiny gem is making a name for itself as a safe 'must-see' destination.

The capital, Ljubljana, has all the charm of Prague in miniature. It achieved its green accolade thanks to an ambitious scheme that transformed a once traffic-choked city into a haven for cyclists and pedestrians.

Dubbed the 'green heart of Europe', Slovenia is at the crossroads of Italy, Austria, Croatia and Hungary. More than a third lies within the Europe-wide network of Natura 2000 protected areas, and 60% is covered by forest.

A haven for food and wine lovers, Slovene cuisine is building a worldwide reputation for its irresistible mix of flavors and styles.

The Wayfarers’ founder Michael West says: 'Slovenia really is a European gem.

'The landscape is breathtaking. From the lakes and mountains of the Julian Alps to the underground river leading to the Skocjan Cave, a World Heritage Site in its own right, and the fairytale Lake Bled, it is the perfect hiking destination.

'Ljubljana is a charming and inspiring city and throughout our tour we are truly spoiled with the wonderful food and wines of Slovenia.

'Because we take care of everything, all our Wayfarers need to to do is enjoy this lovely, unspoiled country, which is fast becoming one of Europe’s most sought-after destinations for all those who love nature and appreciate deep-rooted local culture.'

Highlights of The Wayfarers’ trip include:

  • The capital, Ljubljana, European Green Capital 2016
  • Incredible caves and river canyons
  • Hiking in the pure mountain air of the Julian Alps
  • Beautiful Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj
  • Strong local culture, unchanged for centuries
