• Historic walks in the English countryside
  • Round chalk fells and lush landscapes
  • Winchester Cathedral
  • Arundel Castle, Bignor Roman Villa, Hinton Ampner
  • Roman and iron age antiquities

You needn't travel too far from London to get away from it all! Our South Downs Walk covers a wide swath of England's historic and peaceful South Downs National Park and surrounding area. Along the way, we'll visit some of the most spectacular landscapes and historical artifacts from Amberley to Winchester. This is olde England, and these old routes and droveways follow the chalk escarpment and ridges of the South Downs, as they have done for thousands of year. The landscape is known for its round fells, wooded weald and heathland ridges. There's more than one glorious walk through open fields. Is there anything more freeing? Or anything more magical than a visit to the Ancient Yew forest of Kingley Vale? Along the way we'll see iron age forts and marvel at Roman antiquities, and find more modern day treasures stopping at some of the famous castles and country estates. It really is a marvelous excursion into a land rich with English history and culture.

Sunday Overnight: Amberley Castle

Meet at the Amberley rail station in West Sussex and transfer to our spectacular castle hotel outside Arundel. We'll have a wonderful welcome dinner this evening.

Monday Overnight: Amberley Castle

Our walk begins on the Monarch's Way, walking from the hotel into Arundel for a guided visit at magnificent Arundel Castle, with its medieval keep, wide courtyard and towering gatehouse. It has been the home of the Dukes of Norfolk since 1483 and they still spend time here. After lunch in town, we'll continue out across the estate through open fields and woodlands before returning to our hotel. Dinner tonight is at a nearby pub.

Tuesday Overnight: The Spread Eagle

This morning we're off to Bignor Roman Villa, with its carefully excavated grounds and remarkable world-class mosaics. After a visit, we walk along Stane Street, an ancient Roman road, to the Halnaker Hill windmill, then transfer to the remarkable Weald and Downland Living Museum for a late lunch and guided tour. We'll step back in time to see how rural life in South East England evolved from 950 AD until the 19th Century.

Wednesday Overnight: The Spread Eagle

Experience the magic of South Downs National Park today, walking on the South Downs Way through open grassland, pastures and woodlands as the rolling round downs extend out in all directions. We'll stop at a local pub in Hooksway for lunch, then continue to the Uppark estate, where a young H.G. Wells spent part of his youth. We'll tour the National Trust house and stop for a cuppa before transferring back to our hotel.

Thursday Overnight: The Lainston House

Today begins with a visit to historic East Meon and its 12th Century church, then we'll follow the South Downs Way through stiles and bridle gates to an hill fort dating back to the Iron Age. After lunch in Warnford, we continue on to reach the stunning gardens of Hinton Ampner. There's time for a visit and a cup of tea before we transfer to our fine hotel just outside Winchester.
