• See Palladio's masterpieces
  • Escape the crowds in hidden Venice
  • Visit First World War battlefields
  • Explore the foothills of the Dolomites
  • Sample speciality cheese, grappa and prosecco

The medieval town of Vicenza is our starting point for this varied Walk through the celebrated Veneto region of Italy.

The opulence of the Venetian empire is contrasted with the trenches and tunnels of the First World War as we journey across alpine meadows, and through mountain villages and woods. We take a private boat tour of Venice, visit two of Palladio's magnificent villas and explore old Marostica, still surrounded by its ancient walls.

In the mountain resort of Asiago we taste the famous cheese; in Bassano we sample grappa at the Nardini distillery and cross the wooden Palladian bridge, Ponte degli Alpini.

Sunday Overnight: Hotel Europa Residence

We rendezvous in glorious Vicenza. We have time to wander the streets and enjoy the atmosphere, the architecture and above all, to visit Palladios stunning Teatro Olimpico. We continue to the Villa Capra, perhaps better known as La Rotonda, for a brief visit. We drive to Asiago, a favorite summer resort of the Milanese and Venetians, for our Welcome Drink and Dinner.

Monday Overnight: Hotel Europa Residence

This morning we transfer to Monte Cengio, scene of a very important First World War engagement, the Battle of Asiago, and walk through woods and open countryside to Fort Corbin, an impressive WWI fortification built on top of a cliff. We learn the story of the fort and battle before walking to our lunch in a nearby village. We continue on to the fascinating mountain village of Tresche Conca in the foothills of the Dolomites and then return to Asiago for dinner in a local pizzeria.

Tuesday Overnight: Hotel Europa Residence

We start in Croce SantAntonio and take a gentle uphill track through woods of spruce and larch with panoramic views. We continue walking on mountain trails thru meadows at the foothills of the Dolomites where we can see numerous trenches and bomb shelters from the First World War. We lunch on local products at a farm where the famous Asiago cheese is made and after walk back into the valley .

Wednesday Overnight: Albergo al Sole

An easy walk from the village of San Luca down to a trail overlooking the valley, and on to the charming medieval town of Marostica, surrounded by the ancient walls of its castles and by the many streams that cascade down the hillside. The town is, perhaps, best known for its living chessboard in the main square. After lunch in a traditional osteria, we transfer to Bassano Del Grappa and walk the ancient streets to see the cathedral, upper castle and famous wooden bridge, designed by Palladio. We visit the Nardini Distillery to learn about, and taste, the renowned grappa. We drive to Asolo, one of the loveliest little towns in Italy, much admired by Robert Browning and known as the City of a Hundred Horizons.

Thursday Overnight: Albergo al Sole

Today we walk from the hotel though the scenic hills and woodlands of Asolo, followed by a guided tour and visit of Palladio's famous Villa Barbaro. Here in the Villas winery we enjoy a delicious lunch and a wine tasting. In the afternoon we return to the hotel in Asolo for a cooking lesson; we eat for dinner what we prepare!

Friday Overnight: Hotel Villa del Poggio

En route to the start of our Walk, we visit a neoclassical temple, the Tempio Canoviano designed by the famous painter and sculptor Antonio Canovan in the twilight of his life, and final repository of his genius and ashes. We walk through prosecco vineyards with marvelous views and where most of the cultivation is still done by hand in the traditional way. Prosecco wine tasting and light lunch is prepared by a local family on a terrace overlooking the vineyards. We visit an ancient working water mill en route to our hotel, on a hilltop with views to the Adriatic for our Farewell Dinner.

After breakfast and a transfer, we say "arrivederci" in Venice.
