Follow the ancient Salt Road from the great winemaking areas of Barolo and Barbaresco to the sparkling coast of the Italian Riviera with this Wayfarers walking tour.

˜La Via del Sale means the Salt Road and this new Walk explores the ancient route once used to bring salt from the Ligurian sea inland to Northern Italy in the days when salt was more precious than gold.

We follow La Via del Sale in reverse, starting in Piedmont with the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Langhe-Roero. After tasting the world-famous wines of Barolo and Barbaresco, we wend our way south through the Alta Langa to the Riviera dei Fiori (Riviera of Flowers) and the sparkling coast.

On the way we encounter a landscape of medieval castles, unspoiled historic villages and small Romanesque churches, taking the time to sample the special flavors of the outstanding regional cuisine “ truffles, artisan cheeses, sweet hazelnut cake and agnolotti ravioli.

Sunday Overnight: Hotel Villa Beccaris

Rendezvous at Asti railway station (30 minutes from Turin). Drive to the ancient fortified town of Monforte d' Alba overlooking the vineyards of Barolo for our Welcome Drink and Dinner.

Monday Overnight: Hotel Villa Beccaris

We spend the day exploring the hills of Langhe-Roero around Barolo. We walk from our hotel in Monforte to Barolo Castle through a succession of gentle slopes planted with vines. Quaint farmhouses, picturesque villages and noble castles perch on every undulating fold and contour and make this one of Italys prettiest landscapes. At Barolo Castle we visit the Museum of Wine and enjoy a wine tasting before returning to Monforte.

Tuesday Overnight: Hotel Villa Beccaris

Today we explore the Barbaresco Hills, mainly cultivated with the Nebbiolo grape variety used to make the Barbaresco wine. Characterized by long periods of ageing, this great Italian red wine is internationally recognized as D.O.C.P. We start our walk at the imposing 12th-century brick tower of Barbaresco, which soars above the River Tanaro. From here we hike to the perfectly preserved hilltop village of Neive, one of ˜i borghi pi belli d'Italia (the most beautiful hamlets in Italy). We complete our afternoon with a wine tasting.

Wednesday Overnight: Le Piemontesine

We drive south, along ancient roads in the Alta Langa, to the little town of Murazzano where we walk along green paths through hazelnut woods beside fast flowing streams. This wild and remote area is described by Beppe Fenoglio in his books about the Italian Resistance. During World War II the nearby woods were a Partisan stronghold. Today, the mountains are mostly inhabited by shepherds. We taste the unique local cheese, handmade from the milk of the Langhe sheep, a rare breed found only in this area.

Thursday Overnight: Hotel Punta Est

In the morning we drive to the coast of Liguria, a journey that offers superb panoramic views of the countryside and the coast. The trip gives us a chance to admire how the landscape changes as we approach the Mediterranean. Olive trees appear, their slivery foliage caressed by the sea breeze. Our destination is the fine historic village of Finalborgo, famous for its rock walls. Here we hike to the medieval Castello Gavone in Perti.

Friday Overnight: Hotel Punta Est

We explore the vivid Riviera dei Fiori before driving up to the Plateau Manie. This lovely area of high ground is home to a range of rare plants and wildlife, including the Italian bellflower and the spectacular ocellated lizard, Europes largest. We return on foot, walking downhill along coastal paths with the Ligurian Sea shimmering in the distance until we reach the beach at Varigotti. Theres time for gelati (ice-creams!) before returning to the hotel for our Farewell Dinner.
