Sunday Overnight: Hotel Royal

Meet in the center of Geneva for a brief tour of the old town, then board a water taxi from the shores of Lake Geneva bound for Evian, France. A cable car carries us up to our hotel, a palace overlooking the beautiful lake. Dinner at hotel.

Monday Overnight: Hotel Royal

Transfer by van down to the lake shore for a morning walk to Château de Ripaille, a medieval fortress surrounded by vineyards. After a visit and walk to Thonon harbor, we meet our yacht for a short cruise to the village of Yvoire, classified among the ten most beautiful villages of France. Stroll in Yvoire, then lunch in an auberge overlooking the lake. This afternoon, walk in the countryside and along the lake's banks to medieval Domaine de Rovore. Cruise back to Evian in time for a swim perhaps? Then sunset on the Royal Hotel terrace before dinner in Evian.

Tuesday Overnight: Hotel le Morgane

Drive toward the Alps through the Abondance Valley, famous for its steep peaks, chalets and cheese farms. We'll stop to visit historic Abondance Abbey and taste fresh local cheeses at a cheese maker in nearby Le Mont before starting our first mountain walk from Lac des Plagnes to the hiker hut at Refuge des Tinderets. After lunch, we walk amid stunning alpine views to Bassachaux Pass, then transfer to the famous mountaineering town of Chamonix. Dramatic views abound as we arrive in the middle of Europe's highest mountain range. Dinner at our hotel.

Wednesday Overnight: Hotel le Morgane

Ride the cable-car to the Aiguille du Midi, 3,842 metres, the foothill of Mount Blanc, then up to the peak. Breathtaking views surround us as we descend via cable-car to Le Plan. From this point overlooking the Chamonix valley, we will walk to the glacier, Mer de Glace, and have lunch in the historic hotel of Montenvers. We then return to Chamonix using the alpine train, free to visit the town or rest at the hotel. Dinner in a local restaurant in Chamonix.

Thursday Overnight: Chalet Hotel Croix-Fry

Take the Alpine train to Saint Gervais, a famous mountain and hot spring resort. Then take another cable-car to the summit of Mount Arbois. Our morning walk will be on the crest of beautiful mountain above Mégève, with unending views on the Mont Blanc range. We'll enjoy lunch at a mountain farm, then walk downhill to the town of Mégève, a classic and fashionable ski resort. After a good day's walking, we transfer to the twin valley of Manigod, a typical hamlet of Savoyan farms in the middle of pastures. We love the rustic feel of this luxury hotel, but it's the views that will stay with you forever. Dinner at hotel.

Friday Overnight: Chalet Hotel Croix-Fry

In the morning, we drive north to the Plateau des Glières, famous for the heroic battle fought here by Resistance fighters against German soldiers in 1944. Visit the memorial, then transfer to Lake Annecy and a walk from the hill of Roc de Chère to Talloire. Swim and picnic by the lake, then go by boat to Annecy. Choose from several afternoon options; a guided visit of Annecy, boating, walking, or shopping in the lovely capital of Haute Savoie. Return to Manigod for our Farewell Dinner.

The French Alps are a collision of forces resulting in a large variety of ruggedness of terrain, geology and climate. It's a spectacular sight.
Terrain: Some easy walks, but certain mountain trails at up to 8,500 feet are less suitable for people suffering from vertigo. Some steep ascents, and more descents.
8-10 miles per day with shorter and longer options. Good hiking boots required.

The Chalets-Hotel de la Croix-Fry, is a 4-star chalet hotel sitting in the heart of the Aravis massif, between Annecy and Geneva, at an altitude of nearly 5000ft. The views of the hotel and from the hotel are breathtaking, with otherworldly views of the mountains and ravines of the Aravis valley. It's furnishings and chalet style architecture give the hotel the feel of a traditional mountain pasture residence. However there are many comforts under the eaves, including a sauna, Jacuzzi, heated outdoor swimming pool, and more. The chalet was built in 1939 by the great grandparents of its current owners, and our hosts. Wi-Fi internet access is available.
