Slovenia's historic capital city, Ljubljana, is the starting point for this journey through one of Europe's most unspoilt and diverse landscapes.

Taking in the Julian Alps and the vast underground caves of Postojna, we meander through flower-filled meadows and along the blue-green shores of Lake Bled. We discover cheese-making, bee-keeping and traditional lace, enjoy spectacular waterfalls and gorges, explore ancient castles and breathe Slovenia's pristine air.

A highlight of this Walk is a boat-trip across Lake Bohinj, in the protected waters of Triglav National Park, where we discover the many myths and legends that surround the mystical Bohinj valley.

Saturday Overnight: Grand Hotel Union

We meet in Ljubljana, Slovenia's capital, with time to enjoy the magnificent buildings, bridges and pathways which give the city a unique and unequalled charm. Especially noteworthy are the enchanting Triple Bridge and Market Colonnade. We enjoy an aperitif before an Introductory Talk and Welcome Dinner.

Sunday Overnight: Hotel Kendov dvorec

An easy start brings us to Rakov Skocjan. We admire the natural bridge and the little canyon, carved by water during thousands of years. We walk along the river banks and have lunch in a restaurant in the woods.

In the afternoon, we follow the river Reka underground into the Skocjan Cave, a spectacular World Heritage Site.

Monday Overnight: Hotel Kendov dvorec

A beautiful meander with views to the Julian Alps. We pass hamlets and farms in an open landscape as the locals tend their gardens and cut the summer hay. After lunch in a small town we continue to attractive Idrija with its 16th-century Castle and famous lace school.

Tuesday Overnight: Bohinj Park Eco Hotel

We drive to the wine-growing region of Brda , famous for its landscape and tasty local cuisine. We explore the area of Mount Sabotin, full of historic memories of World War One, which has spectacular views of the surrounding hills. After lunch, our walk continues from village to village, along vineyards and fruit orchards, to a wine-tasting in the wine cellar of a Castle. We then drive along the verdant valley to Most Na Soci , where the Soca River flows into the Idrijca River, to catch the train on the ancient Railway Transalpina Line, built at the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Our train journey passes through beautiful scenery and a tunnel which is almost 4 miles long, and ends at the Bohiniska Bistrica valley where we find our hotel.

Wednesday Overnight: Bohinj Park Eco Hotel

A ferry takes us to the western end of Lake Bohinj, where the 190-ft Savica Waterfall majestically tumbles into the water below. We walk beside the lake and on through delightful historic villages; we visit the museum of Alpine Cheese Making and a 17th-century farm-house. Hayracks, called toplars and unique to Slovenia, are scattered across the landscape.

Thursday Overnight: Grand Hotel Toplice

We walk from the picturesque hamlet of Kupljenik, enjoying grand views of Lake Bled and the surrounding countryside, through woods and fields to the river Sava. On to enchanting Lake Bled and our hotel situated on its shore. We visit the medieval Castle of Bled, perched on a rock, with a marvelous, strategic view of the surroundings.

Friday Overnight: Grand Hotel Toplice

We walk to the stunning Vintgar Gorge, a 500-ft high defile accessible via a continuous chain of gantries and bridges to a waterfall, and on to a village lunch. We walk on through open country to Bled, in time to take a late afternoon cruise to Bled Island.


After breakfast, we return to Ljubljana for our onward connections - or to spend more time in the capital.

Considered to be one of Ljubljana's finest hotels, this hotel is located in a quiet side street but within very easy walking distance of the historic city centre. Formed of 2 separate parts, Business and Executive, the Wayfarers stay in the more historic, Executive part of the hotel which was originally built in 1905 but has been extensively renovated whilst retaining its original architectural style. The spacious Executive bedrooms are designed in Art-Nouveau style and are well-equipped with ensuite bathroom, hairdryer, cable TV, phone, internet access, air conditioning, minibar and safe. There is a large dining-room which serves breakfast and two smaller A La Carte restaurants in which guests can enjoy dinner: Smrekarjev hram is an elegant Art-Nouveau style restaurant serving international cuisine and the Restaurant Union Cellar has a rustic vaulted ceiling and more relaxed atmosphere offering typical Slovenian dishes. On the top floor of the hotel is a small swimming pool, fitness gym and communal sauna with massage available (Guests cannot pre-book massages but masseurs are there from 7am-11am and 3pm-10pm).

Crossing the threshold of the Kendov dvorac ('Kenda Mansion') is like stepping into the past but with all of today's comforts. This truly unique hotel has an extraordinary tranquility, just as if time has stood still. It was origianlly built in 1377 as a country manor for the Kenda family, locally respected landowners who encouraged and supported economic and cultural growth in the area. Now extensively renovated, it remains a monument to a bygone era while retaining the warm hospitality of a family home. The ground floor rooms include two very different style dining rooms, 'Jacobova sobana' with its light airy ambience and large windows and 'Hanina sobana' which is a converted stables with rich, wooden décor. Both serve traditional dishes using authentic, well-tried recipies from the area created from local food bought in fresh each day. The homely ensuite bedrooms are furnished with period furniture from the 19th century and feature fine details like table cloths, curtains and bed linen decorated with the handmade Jdrija lace. Each room is named after a former resident of the Kendov family. All bedrooms offer the usual amenities expected from today's discerning traveller including internet access and guests are welcome to borrow a laptop when available.
