The 'Big Island' of Hawaii offers some of the best and most diverse hiking in the world. We follow trails through lush tropical rain forest, white, green and black sand beaches, across lava sculpted landscape, volcanic mountains, and green rolling foothills with red water streams.

Friday Overnight: Royal Kona Resort

Meet at Kona airport or at the first hotel. Join us this evening for a Welcome Dinner and Introductory Talk seaside!

Saturday Overnight: Royal Kona Resort

Follow the shoreline trail of Kaloka-Honokohau National Historic Park in the shadow of the Hualalai volcano. Walk where the early Hawaiians thrived, in the land of green sea turtles. Beyond the Hawaiian town of Captain Cook, history abounds with visits to St. Benedict's Painted Church, the Place of Refuge (Pu'uhonua O Honaunau), Heiaus (temples) and the ruins of the old fishing village of Ki'ilai. Beautiful flowers contrast the black lava stone in this area of the coast; bougainvillea, poinsettia, hibiscus and the fragrant Plumeria to name a few.

Sunday Overnight: Volcano House Hotel

Head south on a fascinating drive past abundant flowering trees such as the African tulip tree and the lavender blossoms of the Jacaranda Tree, then through lava fields that stretch down from Mauna Loa to the sea. Our destination is the extraordinary Green Sand Beach at South Point (the southernmost point in the US) by way of a wonderful trail that leads through the wind-swept grassy meadows along the coast. Our home for the next two nights is perched on the rim of Kilauea Caldera in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The hikes in the park are unparalleled.

Monday Overnight: Volcano House Hotel

Next day, we'll spend the day in the Park. Sights in this rainforest with ferns the size of trees, include the fascinating Sulphur Banks, the Thurston Lava Tube (an old lava tube large enough to walk through!), the Bird Park (one of the richest concentrations of native plants in Hawaii) and the Kilauea Iki Trail which leads across the lava crust formed by the 1959 eruption of the Kilauea volcano.

Tuesday Overnight: Hilo Hawaiian Hotel

Continue round the island on a side trip to the productive region of Puna, and up a secluded track to the breathtaking vistas from the Green Lake Crater. Our next stop is the historic town of Hilo, and our accomodations situated on Hilo Bay with ocean views to Coconut Island and Hawaii's two highest mountain peaks; Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.

Wednesday Overnight: Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel

Today's highlights are spectacular waterfalls, and the black beach and green walls of the Waipio Valley. We drive up the breathtaking Hamakua coast to visit Rainbow, Akaka and Kahuna Falls, before lunch overlooking the valley. We'll hike down in the valley to the black sand beaches, taro fields, and glimpses of the many hidden waterfalls running down the valley walls. The tropical rain forests and many waterfalls in this six mile long valley once supported 50,000 people!

Thursday Overnight: Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel

Next day, set out on a memorable walk along the ocean to the ancient Mookini Heiau, a sacred temple dating to 480 AD. If time permits, we'll explore the ancient fishing village in Lapakahi State Historical Park, first settled in the 1300s. It's a great vantage point for spying whales! Farewell dinner tonight at our hotel.

Our final Hawaii hike follows the King's Trail (which in 1871 encircled the island), lunch and farewells at the beautiful Anaehoomalu Bay (also called "A" Bay). After lunch the Wayfarers will transfer you to Kona airport.
It's a glorious mixture of spectacular coast and rainforest, volcanoes and exotic flora, history and culture.
