Explore the magnificent, sweeping vistas of Argentinian Patagonia with our Walk in this incredible paradise for hikers. This trip has so many exciting highlights.
We cruise by boat to the foot of the awe-inspiring Perito Moreno Glacier, where chunks of ice regularly "calve" from the main ice sheet and thunder into the water, creating waves that rock the boat. We visit an original pioneer ranch where we see a demonstration of sheep shearing, there is the opportunity to take a horseback ride over the estancia and we see a rich array of wildlife from flamingos to guanacos.
Four nights are spent at a remote but comfortable hotel in the Anita Valley, here we can walk directly from the hotel doors out into the wilderness. Wayfarers who love unspoiled frontiers will exult in the unmatched majesty and silence of the surroundings.
Thursday Overnight: Hotel Kau Yatun
Meet at El Calafate Airport and transfer to the Hotel Kau Yatun. Introductory Talk and Welcome Dinner in the hotel.
Friday Overnight: Hosteria Helsingfors
We head out of town on the famous Route 40 bound for El Chalten. En route we stop at La Leona, the inn made famous as the hiding place of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and may sample their famous lemon pie. We spend the afternoon walking in the wild beauty of the borderlands between Argentina and Chile in Los Glaciares National Park.
Saturday Overnight: Hosteria Helsingfors
We follow the river on the Fitz Roy Trail and climb with ever-wider views of Mount Fitz Roy and its glacier - a thrilling days hike. We finish our route in El Chalten where we have time for a well-earned beer or ice cream.
Sunday Overnight: El Pilar
Leave for Lake Viedma and a very special stay at a family-owned estancia. On arrival at Helsingfors we are welcomed with a traditional asado (barbecue) followed by a gentle afternoon of walking absorbing the peace and beauty of our surroundings.
Monday Overnight: Eolo Lodge
We set out on full days hike to the Blue Lagoon from our hotel and enter the River Alfredo River Valley (the same river that provides energy to the lodge), gradually ascending by the sides of the Huemul Hill. After a steady uphill climb we reach the view of the lagoon, a deep bright blue, contrasting with the darkness of the mountain and the whiteness of the glacier.
Tuesday Overnight: Eolo Lodge
We head back towards El Calafate and settle in our stunning hotel in La Anita Valley. This is a unique location, almost overwhelming in its magnificence with 360-degree views of the surrounding land. We hike beside Nimez Lagoon, which throngs with birdlife.
Wednesday Overnight: Eolo Lodge
Today is one of the highlights of our stay in Patagonia as we take in the outstanding Perito Moreno Glacier! First, we walk the length of the "pasarelas" (catwalks) to marvel at vistas of this amazing force of nature. Then we board a boat and sail to almost touching distance of this gigantic wall of ice.
Thursday Overnight: Eolo Lodge
Today we explore and exult in the majesty of the lodges surroundings, hiking in the Anita Valley along the river and to the heights of Mount Frias with unforgettable views and the chance to see local wildlife from flamingos in the valley to guanacos and hares in the hills. Farewell Dinner in the hotel.
We say farewell and have individual transfers to El Calafate airport.
Please Note: This adventurous vacation covers a large and remote area. On some days we take road transfers to enable us to do justice to this superb region.
