We walk across the blue ice of the Folgefonna glacier and explore the fascinating Hardanger Folk Museum, discovering more about the local way of life across the centuries. We visit a Staves Church and walk through high meadows filled with wildflowers and fresh forests of pine and beech and acres of fruit orchards. Small ferries are an enjoyable necessity in this coastal region and we use many to wend our way across this lovely country.

We say goodbye to Balestrand and cross the fjord by boat to see traditional dwellings and hear about the original villagers way of life before visiting a piece of Norwegian heritage: the 12th century Staves Church at Hoppestad. We visit the local dairy, most famous in Norway for its exclusive cheese named 'Old cheese', for a fortifying snack. We take the minibus to head up into the magnificent mountains, traverse the high plateau before descending again to the enviably located Voss. After lunch we reach Lofthus on the Hardanger Fjord and our next hotel. From there we set off along the Fruit Trail, through the many orchards of Norway's largest fruit growing area. After a leisurely breakfast, we leave the hotel for the village of Kinsarvik, the start of today's walk. The path leads us up along the Husedalen to reach the magnificent waterfalls where we have a picnic lunch. On returning to Kinsarvik we take the ferry across the water to Utne, to visit the open air Hardanger Folk museum. Here we enjoy a Norwegian specialty, see for ourselves the Norwegian way of life, and hear an enchanting recital from the famous Hardanger fiddles, before returning by water to our hotel.

Thursday Overnight: Ullensvang Hotel

We set off today by bus for an industrial experience: we visit the village of Tyssedal where Norway's industrial development started, and then take a look around the Norwegian Museum of Hydropower. We enjoy a walk from the dam along the river to Tyssedal hotel for lunch. In the afternoon we return to Lofthus where we have time to enjoy the hotel's extensive indoor and outdoor facilities.

Friday Overnight: Ullensvang Hotel

We leave our hotel early and take the boat from Lofthus to the pretty village of Herand, where our journey continues by road to Jondal and a private road to reach the glacier plateau.
